GAYLE MORIN
ROUND 10 of the Gawler and District
Netball Association season saw both
A-grade Sandy Creek sides reaffirm
their positions as the main premiership
contenders, beating Virginia and Lutheran
by comfortable margins.
It was also the start of the NetSetGO
Mini Olympics, with all participants receiving
awards for their achievements on
a successful day.
In the A-grade, undefeated, top-ranked
Sandy Creek Green defeated Lutheran 61-
22 after starting strong and continuing to
improve as the game progressed, while
Sandy Creek Blue got the best of Virginia
52-30.
Sandy Creek Blue started well, holding
Virginia’s scoring down by controlling
possession and staying disciplined in their
positions, and then turning that defence
into high percentage offence.
Sandy Creek also showed its class in the
B-grade, beating the previously 8-1 Xavier
Saints 41-20 to leapfrog the Saints into top
spot thanks to superior percentage.
It was a tight game through the early
stages with both teams holding their own,
but Sandy Creek picked up the momentum
in the second half through strong defending,
taking the rebounds and sending the
ball down for the goal.
In the battle for third place, Virginia beat
Lutheran 38-36 in a great contest. Virginia
started out strong early, but couldn’t quite
shake off the Lutheran challenge all day,
escaping with a narrow win.
In C-grade, Gumnuts Jade won its
showdown with Gumnuts Purple 37-16 to
maintain control of second spot.
It was a strong start by both teams, but
Gumnuts Jade’s ability to hold its positions
and get the rebounds proved the major
difference.
Gumnuts Jade is chasing league-leader
Sandy Creek, which was pushed by Xavier
Saints before ultimately winning 28-20.
A low scoring first half kept both teams
in the hunt, but a few changes at half-time
saw the Cockatoos’ defenders go to another
level to delivery their side a win.
In the under-15s, Sandy Creek remained
undefeated with a 52-21 win over second-
placed Virginia.
After a strong start by both defences kept
scores low, half-time changes sparked an
exciting Sandy Creek run to open up the
big winning margin.
Xavier Saints kept Lutheran winless
with a one-sided 71-17 win, with the
Saints goalies on fire from all positions.
In the under-13s, Sandy Creek Blue
strengthened its position atop the ladder
with a narrow 14-9 win against a brave
Gumnuts side which was held scoreless in
the first quarter.
Sandy Creek Green sits in second spot,
and relegated Xavier Saints to 0-10 for the
season with a 33-7 triumph.
