AN ESTIMATED 500 people turned out at Greenock Oval on Sunday for the fifth annual Veteran and Vintage Run.

Hosted by the Gawler Veteran, Vintage and Classic Vehicle Club, all cars involved in the run were built before 1931.

Cars were first on display at Immanuel Lutheran Oval on Lyndoch Road, Gawler, before they departed for Greenock at 9am.

The run took in all the sights and scenery of the Barossa Valley before the convoy arrived at their final destination at midday.

Gawler Council Mayor Karen Redman waved off the cars to get the run started.

Club founder Trevor Bellchambers said the event was a huge success.

“There were people along the track of course and people at the start, the public came in and had a bit of a look and enjoyed looking at the cars because some of them are rather spectacular,” he said.

“I think it was a great success, greatly enjoyed by everyone there.”

Steinborner was the main sponsor of the event and the Sponsor’s Choice award went to a 1909 Stanley Steamer.

President’s award went to an old Dodge utility.

The oldest participating car was a 1904 De Dion-Bouton Type V which had won the Concours d’Elegance at the Bay to Birdwood a few weeks ago.

Participants came from far and wide to take part including a participant from the Northern Territory and one from Kalangadoo in the South East.

Mr Bellchambers said it was great to see so many participants get into the spirit by dressing in period clothes.

“I think it is a reflection of the past, it shows the treasures of the past and I think people love to admire these old things,” he said.

Mr Bellchambers paid tribute to the sponsors and the event organisers for putting on another successful instalment of the run.
