Buns for breast cancer

GAWLER’S Bakers Delight store, in conjunction with Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA), has begun its annual Pink Bun fundraiser to support those affected by breast cancer.

The annual campaign, which will run across the country from May 2 until May 29, will see 100 per cent of bun sales put towards supplying breast cancer sufferers with information packages,
educating them about other people’s experiences with the illness, and providing them with a support system.

As part of the initiative, breast cancer survivors have been photographed with their t-shirts off – while holding a different shaped bun over their breasts to show how support can come in many
different forms – and placed on posters in Bakers Delight stores across Australia.

The campaign came under the national spotlight recently when social media giant Facebook refused to display the photos on its website, due to them breaching the platform’s “partial nudity policy”.

Despite this, Gawler Bakers Delight franchisee Peter O’Sullivan said the support locally has been great.

“It is such a worthwhile cause,” he said.

“We have been involved with this annual charity for over 10 years, last year’s campaign was also successful.

“The aim throughout all stores in Australia is to raise $1.5 million.”

BCNA chief executive Kirsten Pilatti said while the in-store posters celebrate survival, they also show the sometimes confronting reality of the illness.

“It’s a disease that more than 19,000 women and men will be diagnosed with this year,” she said.

“When you find out you have breast cancer, your whole world is turned upside down and your support network becomes really important to you.

“Those people who are really there for you do become your ‘breasties’.”

Locals looking for a healthier way to support the cause can purchase six-packs of rolls, up until May 29, and $1 from each sale will be donated to BCNA.

Anyone who has been affected by breast cancer can call the BCNA helpline on 1800 500 258 or visit bcna.org.au for more information.
