KAPUNDA extended its winning streak to 11 games as it crushed South Gawler by 25 goals in Barossa, Light & Gawler senior one netball on Saturday.
The Bombers got off to a great start, but it looked as if the Lions would be competitive as they only trailed by one goal at the first break.
South’s solid form continued into the start of the second stanza, but Kapunda soon found its groove and blew the Lions out of the park.
The Bombers extended their lead to eight goals at half-time, and never looked back.
South was shell-shocked by Kapunda and was unable to capitalise on its turnovers.
The competition’s last remaining undefeated side extended its lead again at three-quarter-time to an insurmountable 17 goals.
South could only add a further seven goals to 15 in the final quarter, as it was completely blown out of the water.
South Gawler player-coach Bec Brading was frustrated with the loss, which was the Lions’ fifth of the season.
“Unfortunately, I don’t think we were able to string our quarters together,” she said.
“We had a great first quarter and a good start to the second.
“We couldn’t capitalise on turnovers, we didn’t adjust to Kapunda and their intensity, and didn’t match it with them.”
Despite the poor result, Brading was delighted with two players – one at each end of the court.
“Kayla (Vial) in goalkeeper, she continues to work hard the whole time with myself down there,” she said.
“Kelsey (Wilksch) really stepped up this week and was quite accurate.”
Kapunda faces bottom side Tanunda this week, while South Gawler takes on the Magpies’ wooden spoon rival Freeling at its new indoor facility.
“It’ll be a good opportunity to work on some things and hopefully get a confidence boosting win,” Brading said.
“You know there won’t be wind (in the indoor facility), but it can be quite humid and slippery; some girls have played premier league netball indoors, so they’re used to what it’s like.”
Elsewhere, Gawler Central continued its good form by belting Tanunda by 45 goals.
The win moves the Tigers a game clear in third position of South Gawler, and all but seals a finals berth.
Meanwhile, Willaston accounted for Angaston by four goals.
It places the Donnybrooks to just two games outside of the top four, while it keeps the Panthers three games away from fourth-placed South Gawler.
Finally, Nuriootpa was valiant as it succumbed to Barossa District by nine goals.
The Tigers are still two games out of the top four, while the Bulldogs remain on top of the ladder by percentage over Kapunda.
