GAWLER trainer Darren Magro believes Bohemian Forest, winner of the Goldin Farms Benchmark 64 Handicap (1514m) at Gawler on Sunday, might be a mare to follow later in the year.

“She will probably go for a break, but I think she might be able to win in town next preparation,” Magro said.

“I’ve always liked her, but as a young horse she had a few minor issues.

“Her recent form has been very good, and she just keeps improving.”

Jockey Jason Holder, who won earlier in the day on Dextiny, brought up a double when Bohemian Forest ($4) scored a long-head win from Impulse Diavolo ($3.60 fav), with Maxsamia ($6.50) one-and-a-quarter lengths away third.

Magro said the four-year-old mare had been bred by Des Pope at Oakbank.

“We’ve always liked the mare, so much so that we bought her yearling sister, which is now a two-year-old,” he said.

Magro has placed Bohemian Forest well with three wins and five placings from just 12 starts.

Meanwhile, New Zealanders Colin Johnson and Leo Dare successfully raced horses many years ago, but Run For Success gave the pair their first win in Australia in the Kingsford Hotel Maiden  (2118m).

A well-backed $3.10 chance, Run For Success, ridden by Raquel Clark, scored a longneck win from Take It Up Gia ($9), with Manilow ($6) a neck away third.

Dare, father of co-trainer Heather Frew, now lives at Murray Bridge, but Johnson, who still lives on the South Island of New Zealand, only flew to Adelaide on Friday and was on course to share the joy of the victory.

Part-owner and co-trained Kevin Frew said the four-year-old had deserved the win.

“He has been racing well and Raquel rode him perfectly,” he said.

“I’ve already given him experience over jumps and I think he will make a good jumper later in his career.”

Promising three-year-old Rapid Bay may head to the city following his debut win in the SA Bookmakers Association Maiden (1514m).

A red hot $1.18 favourite, Rapid Bay raced away to score a three-length win from Vacant Block ($16), with Grinzinger Charger ($31) five lengths away third.

The winner was ridden by Dom Tourneur who brought up a race-to-race double having scored on Eperdument in the previous race.

Victor Harbor trainer Jake Stephens said Rapid Bay, which he bred, would be suited in events up to 2000 metres.

Tourneur was also confident Rapid Bay would measure up in town.

The Terrace Function Centre at the Gawler racecourse was booked out on Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 11 as many families treated their mums to a day at the races.

The next Gawler race day is the 2019 Goldin Farms Barossa Cup meeting on Wednesday, May 22.
