FRIENDS and relatives of much-loved
Gawler teacher and singer Anton Minge
gathered at Poetic Justice cafe in Walker
Place on Saturday to celebrate his life.
Anton, who died last month, was
called “a beautiful soul” by one of those
who attended, according to cafe owner
Gayle Joyce.
People were encouraged to take musical
instruments and talk about Anton, who taught
at Gawler East and Gawler primary schools,
was well-known as a busker at Poetic Justice
and formed a local ukulele group. He also wrote
a poetry book and was instrumental in setting up
Gawler Suicide Prevention Group.
“Anton was a huge part of this community,”
Gayle said.
“It was a beautiful, beautiful day – we had
some awesome members of our community
stand up and make a few speeches. Then
they’d come in here (in the cafe) and have a bit
of a breakdown!”
Family members, including his son, uncle
and cousin also attended.
“Anton actually did epitomise community,”
Gayle said.
“Although he had his struggles, he was always
available when people needed to have a
yarn; he was sharing and compassionate.
“He was always boosting their confidence
and helping them go that extra mile.
“He was a father, a son, a brother, an uncle,
a great friend, school teacher – he was just a
beautiful guy.”
