Beard chop for a cause
1 min read

MALLALA’s Max Angus is proving age is no barrier to stepping up and doing your part to help others.

The 70-year-old will be parting ways with his head hair and most of his beard at the end of this month, as part of a fundraiser for the Childhood Cancer Association.

Mr Angus, who has three grandchildren and a great-grand daughter, said he loves children and has an appreciation for life, having battled for a lengthy period with depression and anxiety.

“You never know how much time you have left, so you might as well do something good while you can,” he said.

It’s not the first time Mr Angus, who is a regular face about town, has raised money for childhood cancer research, shaving his hair previously in 2007 and 2009 to raise a combined $2141.

“They’ve all been done in winter and the last one, it was cold – felt like someone had put an icepack on my head,” he said.

“I’ve only set a small target of $500 this time but I’m already up to $330 and you just don’t know once word of mouth gets out,” he said.

Mr Angus currently has a collection tin at Mallala’s M & G Takeaway, which is where he will also face the clippers at midday, on Thursday, July 30.

“The shearer is going to be my granddaughter because she’s the one who has been asking to get at it and trim it up a few times, so we thought we would let her have the pleasure of getting rid of it,” he said.
