OUTGOING Playford Deputy Mayor Marilyn Baker received recognition for a combined 35 years of service in local government at last week’s council meeting.

Ms Baker served on the City of Elizabeth from May 1981 through to November 2006, before joining the City of Playford on November 2010 and remains on the council.

Speaking at council, Ms Baker said it has certainly ‘been a journey’, with plenty of highs and lows.

“It’s certainly been a journey,” she said.

“I was privileged to join the City of Elizabeth in 1981, that was when the city had about 10,000-12,000 people, when now we have 120,000 people.

“There’s been some great times, and some trying times.

“One of the most incredible times in local government I think was at the time of the amalgamation process.

“It was indeed very traumatic, the very reluctant amalgamation of councils.

“There were several councils, including Elizabeth and Munno Para, who just didn't want to do it.

“The following two terms of the City of Playford were absolutely horrendous.

“I feel very privileged and honoured to take that journey with a city I dearly love.

“I've lived here since 1958 and hopefully a few more years yet.”

Despite the battles, Ms Baker encouraged her fellow councillors to remain strong.

“Stick with it folks, it really does bring rewards,” she said.

Councillor Andrew Craig also received recognition for 20 years involved in local government.
