TRAVELLING to St Peter’s College, Trinity Old Scholars’ A1 Adelaide Turf Cricket Association side put up a solid 181 to defend on day two after a balanced batting performance saw seven batsmen reach double figures.
Openers Shaun Lay and Jarryd Furnell did their job, scoring 38 and 27 respectively and batting for over an hour apiece, before number-three Eythan Barraclough undid some hard work with his third consecutive innings achieving less than five runs.
Mitchell Dearing chipped in with a patient 34 from 95 deliveries, before a rare 10-11 tail-end partnership saw bowlers Liam Beazleigh (24) and Bradley Matters (14) show some skill with the
willow.
In B1 Trinity looked comfortable on its home deck against the visiting Rostrevor Old Collegians, winning the toss and going on to make 366 in its 76 overs.
With seven batsmen eclipsing 23 runs, it was a miserable day in the field as Austin Smith (85),
Alex Cotter (63), Matthew Bailey (56) and Brad Cameron (55) ran roughshod over the visiting bowlers to set up what should be a comfortable day-two
defence.
In LO 4, Trinity hosted Blue Brigade in a one-day fixture and was unable to defend its 117 total.
With only number-nine Ryan Roberts (44) mounting a real score, four TOSers fell for two-or-fewer runs in a rough batting
performance.
Blue Brigade made the chase look easy, winning by six wickets with 16 overs remaining.

THE penultimate round of the Barossa and Light Cricket Association’s A1-reserves competition was all about Angaston’s Lachlan Lade as he put up 139 from 216 deliveries, including 10 sixes, to set a target of 9/256 for Gawler Central to chase down on day two.
Lade carried a largely rotating cast of supporting batsmen, with eight batsmen retiring for single figures, but received much-needed help from Liam Peel (50) and wicketkeeper Angus Pfeiffer (30).
Tigers’ all-rounder Josh Lourens had a busy day, taking 6/100 from 24 overs of work.
A win for Angaston would give the side a chance to take Gawler Central’s finals spot in the last round of the season.
Lyndoch, who also needs a win to pull within striking distance of Gawler Central’s fourth-place, has a real chance to knock off league-leaders Greenock on its home deck, removing the hosts for 143 and heading to stumps with 10 wickets in hand.
Nathan Goulding was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3/24 from his 12 overs, while no Greenock batsman were able to hit 30 runs.
The visitors navigated the remaining seven overs safely, ending the day on 0/13.
Last-placed Kapunda has a chance to snag a late-season scalp after setting a target of 8/194 for finals-bound Light Pass, with the opening pair starting their team off 0/100.
With four ducks throughout the line-up, Brett Johnson (63), Travis Opitz (49), Sam Ryan (36 not-out) and Lachlan Mickan (31) provided almost all of their team’s final score.
Danny Kaye bowled 31 overs for 2/56 with 13 maidens in an ironman performance for the visitors, who will need to bat well top hold onto its top-two spot.
In A2, South Gawler’s James Nas finished the day 94 not-out to propel his side to a strong 9/203 from 65 overs at Tanunda, with a surprising cameo from number-10 Bradley Golder (42 from 76 deliveries).
In A3, Kapunda and Greenock are locked in a rock fight, with the former being retired for 92 in under 40 overs, before the latter limped its way to 7/57 at stumps and needing a tail-end hero to stand up on day two.
In A4, Greenock’s David Coombs smashed a dominant 118 in his side’s one-day clash with South Gawler, with the Lions falling 65-runs short of the 4/221 total.
In A5, Lyndoch bullied Greenock, making 2/233 in its 40 overs before bowling the hosts out for just 20 runs in 20 overs, including six ducks.

A STARRING performance from Gilbert Valley’s Kym Vandeleur (101) has put his side in a strong position heading into day two of its Barossa and Light Cricket Association A1 matchup at Tanunda.
The Bulls, so far winless through 11 matches, also got respectable contributions from opener Riley McInerney (28) and wicketkeeper Caleb Schwartz (23) on its way to a 8/203 total – the highest A1 total on the weekend.
Christian Gattermayr (4/53) and Trent Goers (3/42) were asked to perform most of the heavy lifting with the ball for the Magpies, before the pair also survived the day’s remaining four overs to reach stumps at 0/13.
Tigers battle Blues
Nuriootpa is in with a chance of handing the visiting Angaston its first regular season loss of the season after some sharp work late in the day left the away side 2/28 at stumps, chasing 135.
It was looking grim for the Tigers early, falling to 5/24 before the crucial pairing of Mitch Norton (51) and Jake Heinze (39) came to the crease and combined for 90 while soaking up over 200 deliveries.
In a balanced bowling attack, Aaron Murphy (3/34) led the way, while Jack Henke (1/4, three maidens from six overs) was extremely economical.
With 10 overs of daylight remaining, Daniel Doecke took two crucial wickets to swing the game right back up-for-grabs going into day two, with Nuriootpa needing a win to potentially break into the top-four.
Cockatoos
bowling for finals
Sandy Creek is in a dangerous position sitting in fourth spot, with percentage the only thing keeping it in its finals spot, and will have to stop South Gawler in its tracks if it wants to control its own destiny.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat on Eldred Riggs Reserve, runs never flowed freely for the Cockatoos, with Rhys Handtke’s 30 from 100 deliveries illustrating how the Lions were unwilling to give anything away for free.
Led by David Golder (3/43), South Gawler dismissed the visitors for 138, and with its remaining 11 overs, went on the offensive, racing to 2/52 before stumps.
The hosts will need 87 runs to lock in its finals spot, while also opening the door for Nuriootpa to jump into fourth.
Timely wickets
help Mallala
With both teams out of the finals race barring a miracle, Mallala made the trip to Freeling and was sent in to bowl by the hosts.
Sam Angus (4/54) dismissed both openers for 27 and 26 respectively, with nobody else able to top those scores as the Water Hens were bowled out for 146.
Not to be rushed, Mallala crawled through the remaining 20 overs
with openers Jake Birchmore (13 from 63 deliveries) and David Cawrse (6 from 57 deliveries) flexing their patience.

HEADING into its third season, the Sandy Creek Netball Club (SCNC) had a well-attended trial day on the weekend despite hot weather, with the club expecting to field three junior sides and four senior sides in Gawler and District Netball Association competitions.
SCNC are in the midst of an incredible rise to prominence in the local netball world after fielding just one team in its debut season, before fielding two A-grade senior teams last year with word spreading fast.
A-grade player Lauri Catalano said the club had everything she was looking for, so much so that she is happy to travel an hour each way to play.
“It’s a very family orientated club,” she said.
“Although we take it very seriously and we like our premiership wins, we’re just one really big happy family and are there for each other outside of netball as well.
“I think that’s really important, and I think that’s why the club has built so quickly.”
For senior coach Scott Hill, the proof is in the pudding, with players from Virginia, Mawson Lakes, Lightsview and Roseworthy all deciding to call Sandy Creek home.
“It’s a destination club,” Hill said half-jokingly.
“The culture is infectious and people are prepared to travel to be a part of it.
“We had existing players and
parents jumping out of trees to help us out with coaching the junior teams, so it’s a really good way to be starting our third season.”
Hill spoke about the club’s partnership with Sandy Creek Cricket Club (SCCC), how instrumental it was in the process, as well as hopes for future collaborations.
“Corey Roberts and all of the (SCCC) committee gave us a glowing endorsement, and without them our club basically wouldn’t exist.
“In terms of growing the club, we’re excited to do a lot of future work together in fundraisers, presentations and all sorts of collaborative work between us.
“Hopefully we can expand into a bigger club and push for some grants to improve the facilities at Curdnatta Park, SCCC’s home ground, and also where the netball club is based.”

IN the final round of the Barossa and Gawler Combined tennis season, Kapunda secured third-place while South Lyndoch completed a winless season (0-13) in
division one action on Friday night.
The wooden-spooners held up well in the doubles, winning two out of four men’s doubles sets, while Naomi Griffiths won her singles set 6-1 before combining with Georgia Cowgill to take a doubles matchup 6-3.
The remaining 12 sets went to Kapunda, with Tom Christley, Sarah Johnson and Kylie Wendt all going undefeated on the day.
Nuriootpa made a statement against Xavier Saints in a top-of-the-table clash, taking the match 10 sets to six, but the 88-82 games total told the story of how tightly contested it was.
Seven of the 10 sets Nuri claimed were within two games, while Xavier claimed some big sets, such as Michael Oermann and Tyson Reudiger’s 6-1 doubles win.
For the winners, Alexander Reincke was superb, taking hard fought 6-4 and 7-5 wins before a strong 9-2 doubles performance with Steven Schmidt.
In division two, Xavier Saints finished the regular season perfect at 13-0, and did so by repelling a Tod St team that needed the win to jump into second place, taking the match 12 sets to four.
The Saints’ ladies finished the season the same way they started, dominating action to win all six sets, while the men split the sets three-apiece, and the mixed-doubles went 3-1 in Xavier’s favour.
Lyndoch claimed the wooden-spoon, but also a morale-boosting win after taking a nine sets to seven win over Willaston, despite winning 14 fewer games.
Willaston had four 6-0 wins on the day, with Jodie Schuster going a perfect 18-0 in her three sets.
While Willaston was taking the wide sets, Lyndoch was digging in for the tight ones, taking multiple sets 7-6 with Andrew Lane and Ryan Ogden both going undefeated.
Finals kick off this Saturday in both divisions, in a first versus second double chance, third versus fourth elimination fixture.

IN exciting news for South Australian basketball, the Basketball SA’s Premier League will be moving under the NBL’s NBL1 banner going forward, barring any last-minute roadblocks from teams clubs signing on the dotted line.
The plans will rebrand the league as NBL1 Central, and will include specific ‘match of the round’ games to be broadcast on Australian sports streaming giant Kayo.
Vice president of Central District Basketball Club, Kevin Fischer, said this is a significant step in the right direction, and will put South Australian basketball on the national radar.
“Because the league is going to be patched under (the NBL), there are some flow-on benefits from that,” he said.
“Does that NBL teams will be playing in Gawler – probably not – but what it does mean is now the competition is tiered within the second-highest level in Australia, just below the NBL.”
NBL chief operating officer Andy
Crook complemented the way South
Australia was able to push these new developments through quickly, after talks
were initially for the changeover to occur in 2021.
“These are exciting times for South Australian basketball and the NBL,” he said.
“We applaud Basketball South Australia and the clubs for embracing the opportunity to launch NBL1 Central in 2020.
“Huge credit also needs to be given to Basketball South Australia and the Basketball Adelaide Board for collectively leading this change process and for sharing the NBL’s vision for NBL1.”
The NBL1 Central’s inaugural season is set to kick off on Saturday, March 14, with Central District scheduled to host its first home game at 8.15pm at STARplex the following Saturday, March 21.

GAWLER Eagles named its Seniors captain and vice-captain last week, with Iradi Baragomwa set to retain the armband and lead the side in a season with high expectations.
Baragomwa emerged as a leader of men last season, according to coach Mike Cawood, who said that the choice for who would lead this club on its quest for promotion was an easy one.
“He sets an excellent example, both on and off the pitch,” he said.
“Whenever someone needs to take the initiative and get something done, he’s always the first one with his hand up.
“The boys really respond to his leadership.”
Baragomwa will be supported by two vice-captains, Christian Taylor and Phil Cawood.
The leadership group has been asked to guide a team that has gone through a number of changes, with an impressive recruiting class this season that brings a number of young first-team quality players, as well as the signing of marquee striker Benny Kovadio from Adelaide City via Ivory Coast.
Cawood said that while building from within the club’s junior ranks is crucial, to be able to land recruits that can spend a number of years in the Eagles’ system before turning 20 does give it more of a home-grown feel.
“They’ve got plenty of class and with a couple of years in our system I think most, if not all will be at National Premier League (NPL) level,” he said.
“It’s important for us to continue to find good young players, both in our ranks currently and from other places, and keep building this club from the ground up.
“We have some really, really talented kids in the under-15s as well.
“I don’t want to put too much pressure on them, but the way things are now with it being less about physical strength and more about technical ability, I’m telling you, these boys have real class about them.”
After last season’s promotion race came down to an unsuccessful last game, it would be fair to enter the season with a ‘promotion-or-bust’ mentality, but Cawood said his side would work towards a number of goals throughout the season.
“Our first goal is to just make the final-six,” he said.
“Then it’s to make the top-four, then top-two.
“It’s all about hitting our milestones and continuing to build on what we’re doing.”
