Angle Vale off to best APFL start in club history

LAIM PHILLIPS
ANGLE Vale Football Club is off to the
best A-grade start since joining the Adelaide
Plains Football League in 2016,
smashing United 33.19 (217) to 7.10 (52)
to move to 3-0.
It was an incredible high-scoring start to
the match, with the two sides combining to
register 23 scoring shots in the first quarter as
the Owls went into the first break up 9.3 (57)
to 3.8 (36).
While the Tigers’ scoring dried up, Angle
Vale’s didn’t, piling on another 7.4 in the second
quarter to reach halftime up 16.7 (103) to
4.9 (33).
Owl key forward Robert Kovacic kicked
nine goals after kicking 10 last week, bringing
his league-leading goal tally up to 22 from
three games.
It was one of a number of blowouts in the
round, with Mallala also putting the hurt on
Hummocks Watchman with a 22.18 (150) to
3.1 (19) win in a clash between the past two
premiers.
The match was essentially over at quarter
time as Mallala led 10.3 (63) to zero, with
Brian Montgomery kicking eight goals for the
contest in an impressive display.
As with Freeling in the Barossa, Light &
Gawler Football Association, Hummocks
Watchman appears to have taken a serious hit
resulting from not playing in 2020 as players
found their way to other clubs and never came
back.
It was a different story for Balaklava, which
also didn’t play in 2020, as it handled its business
against a plucky Hamley Bridge side which has
graduated from the ranks of easy-beats, but still
went down 18.16 (124) to 6.15 (51).
Star Bomber John Butcher again lived up
to his reputation, kicking five of Hamley
Bridge’s six goals to hold onto second place
in the goal-kicking race.
After pummelling Balaklava last week, Two
Wells put together another statement-making
win at Virginia as the Roosters came away
with a 29.17 (191) to 6.8 (44) triumph.
Things got messy late, but the Rams were
right in the contest at quarter time as the two
sides registered five scoring shots each.
Two Wells then kicked 7.7 in the second quarter,
6.6 in the third and 12.3 in the last as the
Roosters showed no mercy, with Caleb Edmead
kicking six goals, Luke Barnett five, and five of
their teammates booting at least two.
