MCKENZIE THOMPSON

GAWLER & District College recently welcomed its newly-appointed principal, Angie Michael, in time for the commencement of term two.

Already, Ms Michael said she has been greeted with open arms from all students and staff at the Evanston area school.

“I can’t believe how warm and friendly the Gawler & District College community has been,” she said.

“Everyone wants to get to know me, and find out what my vision is for the school.

“It has been really exciting.

“Over the three weeks of me being here, I have already been speaking to all year levels about what my vision is for the school.

“For me, this is my chance to soak up the Gawler & District College culture and connect with school leaders.”

With over 30 years’ experience in education, Ms Michael first began her teaching career at Parafield’s High School, where she was appointed as a design teacher.

“I have also worked at Salisbury East High School as a VET co-ordinator, which was my first leadership position,” she said.

“Most recently, I have come from Marc Oliphant College as a deputy principal.

“I have always worked in the north, I don’t know why – maybe it was a comfort thing.”

Ms Michael said the learning and the growth she has undertaken as an educator has been amazing and challenging in a great way.

“For me, it has been an absolute pleasure to be involved in education,” she said.

“I feel honoured and privileged to have been given the opportunity to lead Gawler & District College.

“This year, my role is really about understanding the processes and connecting with our site improvement plan on every level.

“It is about continual improvement and developing a common understanding with all staff and the students.

“It is also about supporting our leaders, then supporting our teachers about how to improve reading across the board in relation to our site improvement plan.

“I have to get everyone on board with the same common narrative on how we can deliver on our vision.

“Always, the underlying notion for me is about what’s best for our children.”
