Angaston bowls over the competition

LIAM PHILLIPS
ANGASTON Bowling Club added
some trophies to its case on
Saturday as it took out three of the
four grand finals on offer in division
one, division 2a and division
2b, while going down to Tanunda
in division three to prevent a clean
sweep.
In division one, Angaston came
up against a Lyndoch side that had
beaten it twice in the regular season,
but had no answer for the reigning
champion clicking on all cylinders
as the minor premier won all four
rinks.
The best frame of the day went
to the four of Bruce Field, Kate Argent-
Bowden, Ian Elsworthy and
Liam Buckley with a 29-20 score
to help stretch out the 105-78 final
margin.
In division 2a, Angaston beat Tanunda
77-66 despite losing two out
of three rinks. Tanunda was put in
a strong position as the fours led
by David Armstrong (17-22) and
Ian Jaensch (20-25) did the job, but
a massive 40-19 frame from the
Angaston four of Eileen Argent,
Miguel Silvestro, Judy Argent and
Chris Reardon proved to be a title-
winning performance.
It was a similar story in division
2b, where Nuriootpa took two of the
three rinks, including a massive 19-
38 from Carmen Isbel’s crew, but
the Angaston four of Murray Klingner,
Barb Bullock, Mike Teakle and
Malcolm Johnston still carried their
side over the top with a 38-16 rinks
to win 75-73.
Tanunda was able to get the job
done against Angaston 60-44 in division
three behind a 27-8 rink from
the four of Peter Burgemeister,
Margaret Slater, Glenis Kupke and
Brian Hoklas as the remaining two
frames were split evenly in close
contests.

THE Metropolitan Bowling
Association division five championship
has been taken out by
Gawler Red team, which finished
the season in style, winning
the pennant by 24 shots
against Two Wells.
Playing on neutral turf at Modbury,
the pace of the green, due
to overnight rain, was slower than
Gawler’s greens, but was this balanced
out by it still being quicker
than Two Wells’s home ground.
While the final was tense with not
a lot separating the sides, Gawler,
end by end, slowly and steadily
drew clear.
The four of Bob Fuller, Darrell
Turner, Dawn Warland and Kay
Moncrieff – big winners in the
semi-final – were the standouts
again, posting an impressive 11-
shot win.
Shirley Branson, a late callup
from the Gawler White team,
proved up to the challenge, guiding
her charges to a three-shot
win, while experienced skipper
Brian Lacey, with an equally
match-hardened crew, finished
five shots up.
Paul Trzeciak’s lads were also
too good for their opponents, running
out five-shot victors.
Spending just the one season
in division five, the team returns
to division four when the season
starts again in October.
Clearly the best side in division
five all season, and with settled
players in all positions, the challenge
next season will not merely
be to stay in division four – but to
push for finals once again.
