A golden night at the Gawler greyhounds
2 min read

A FANTASTIC field has been assembled for the group three Gawler Gold Cup to be held at the Gawler Greyhound Racing Track this Sunday.
South Australia’s third group three event on the calendar, the Gold Cup always attracts a competitive field, with this year’s final being no exception.
The four quality heats were run on Monday with the winner and second-place runner gaining a start in Sunday’s cup.
Greyhound Racing SA’s Shaun Mathieson has previewed each runner in the Gawler Gold Cup.

BOX 1 - AIR MARSHALL – Returned to the winners list with a strong win in his heat leading throughout in a flying 30.87. He loves Gawler, winning six of his 11 starts over the 531m and looks hard to beat from the inside draw.

BOX 2 - MAJOR MAJOR – Class performer who ran home well into second in his heat. In brilliant form recently winning the group three SA Derby. Can explode from the boxes and has terrific field sense.

BOX 3 - GOLDEN NIGHT – Brilliant group one Adelaide Cup winner who showed his class in the heats, leading throughout in the night’s best time of 30.67. He has gone from strength to strength for Troy Murray and looks the one to beat.

BOX 4 - IT’S A RIOT – A greyhound with explosive early pace who loves to find the rails, and led until the last stride in his heat. First look at the Gawler 531m in the heats and will derive plenty of benefit from the run. Too good to dismiss.

BOX 5 – SPRINGVALE ISSY – The most improved greyhound in SA who charged home from a long way back to win her heat in 31.20. Won the Adelaide Cup Consolation and while drawn awkwardly, her finishing burst is exceptional.

6 - DEFY – Considered SA’s best middle distance chaser, he produced a barnstorming finish to take second in his heat. Best suited to an inside draw, but has the strength to overpower his rivals in the final straight if the breaks go his way.

7 – BOLD MIRAGE – Chased hard against Golden Night when running second in the heats. Up-and-comer who can show good speed from the boxes. Each-way hopes.

8 - ASTON SILK – Showed good speed from box eight, grabbing the lead in the back straight in her slick 30.99 heat win. Produced a blistering 29.49 last start at Angle Park and seems to be getting better and better.

ALWAYS’S HO HO (first reserve) and SPRING BURNER (second reserve) are the reserves for the final.

With restrictions in place due to COVID-19, this year’s event has a reduced capacity and anyone wishing to attend is advised to book a free general admission ticket online to avoid disappointment.
