A Gawler High night to re-unite
2 min read

TWO former Gawler High Students are on the lookout for their fellow classmates who graduated in 1979 or started in 1982, as they prepare a pair of reunions.

Dean Gibson, who graduated in 1979, is looking for old Gawler High alumni who graduated in 1979 for a reunion to be held at the Kingsford Hotel on July 20.

He said the school was an interesting place during the mid-tolate 70s.

“There were a lot of hippy, straight out of teacher’s college, first year teachers, which was interesting,” he said.

“We had a mix of teachers in their mid-40s and teachers in their mid-20s, which was obviously a big contrast as it was a pretty turbulent time politically.

“One of our teachers actually got a hold of some photos that no one had actually seen before from our year 12 formal.

“That caused a lot of discussion about late 70s fashion, it was a good look back.”

Fellow former Gawler High student Jude McColough is searching for students who began at the school in 1982, for a reunion at the Gawler Arms Hotel on July 20.

She said she wanted to open up the reunion to everyone who attended between 1982 and 1986 because many students during that era did not complete year 12.

“So many kids left to get jobs during years 10 to 12, but we still want to see them,” she said.

“Social media has been great, but there’s still so many people lost in the midst we can’t find.

“Some old photos are starting to be posted on social media and you just shake your head sometimes and laugh.

“For us in the 80s it was all about big hair, bad makeup and big shoulders, for the boys and girls.”

Both Mr Gibson and Mrs McClough said they saw school reunions as a great way to reconnect with old friends and to have a good laugh about their childhood.

“We have folks coming from as far away as Iraq, another hasn’t been back in Gawler for more than 30 years,” Mr Gibson said.

“We also have about six staff coming along as well.

“The whole process of re-engaging with folks I haven’t seen for 40 years has been fantastic, it’s made me feel a little younger.”

Any former Gawler High students who meet the criteria for the reunions can contact Dean Gibson on 0438 010 451 or Jude McClough on 0438 323 949 for more information.
