A deserving award for Megan
2 min read

KAPUNDA’S Megan McWaters loves being involved in her community and goes out of her way to help others.

The mum of three has been chosen as Light Regional’s Citizen of the Year – an honour in recognition of her selfless contribution to society.

She said the award has come unexpectedly, but she is humbled to be acknowledged.

“I don’t do all these things for any recognition, it’s just what I do” she told The Bunyip.

“...We love Kapunda; it’s such a nice town and everything we need is here.

“The people are beautiful and it’s a lovely community.”

As store manager of the Kapunda and Eudunda Terry White chemists, Megan is a well-known face about town.

Many know Megan for her passionate involvement raising funds and awareness for Ovarian Cancer Australia, having lost three close family members to the disease.

She is currently planning for another fundraising initiative for Ovarian Cancer Awareness month, in February.

“Up until my aunty was diagnosed we didn’t really know what the teal ribbon meant, so my aim is that everyone will know what it means and hopefully one day there is a cure,” Megan said.

Megan holds a number of volunteer positions, one of which sees her as chairperson and regular delivery driver for the local Meals on Wheels.

“I like that I can help the community and the elderly in the town which kind of goes hand in hand with my job as well,” she said.

“One day I might need it and I hope people would then be volunteering their time to help me out.”

She’s a canteen volunteer at Kapunda Primary and High Schools among other school-based roles, and is also a keen netball player and is on the Kapunda Netball Club committee.

Megan has been involved with the Kapunda Musical Society, Young Persons Drama Workshop and the annual town pantomime for several years.

“I really enjoy it, it’s just good fun and you meet lots of different people and it’s just nice to have a bit of a laugh at the end of the year,” she said.

“Anywhere my kids are I like to be involved and contribute my time.”

Megan will be formally presented her award at Light Regional’s Australia Day event, to be held at Greenock Centenary Park, from 7.45am on Tuesday, January 26.

Along with the awards presentation, the event also includes a free community breakfast, citizenship ceremony and a flag raising ceremony conducted by the cadets of the Australian Air League Gawler Squadron.

Light Regional Council Mayor Bill O’Brien said it is wonderful to be able to acknowledge the efforts of the individual winners, as well as all who contributed to the highly successful community event and project.

“The entries we received demonstrated the commitment that exists within the community as well as the desire to recognise the wide-ranging achievements of individuals who selflessly contribute to so many aspects of community life,” he said.

Winners were selected by elected members using secret ballot.
