800-plus crowd praised at women’s grand finals as it witnessed a… Female ‘evolution’

ON a perfect day for football at Freeling oval more than 800 people made the trip to watch the culmination of the Barossa Light & Gawler Football Association women’s seasons.
In the under-14s Barossa District beat Kapunda, Angaston got the job done against Willaston in the under-17s, and Willaston capped off an undefeated season with a flag in the seniors.
League president Mick Brien said it all went as well as he could have hoped for.
“It was great to see the support for women’s football and the way it has grown over the past few years,” he said.
“Everyone was well-behaved – at one point a police patrol came through, did a lap, and ticked us off which is a credit to the crowd in attendance.
“One thing we’d like to see going forward with the men’s finals over the next two weeks is people bringing their own chairs if possible – especially if you plan on drinking.
“Also, nobody other than players and club officials are permitted on the oval at any time during the day – not between games, or between quarters – not at all.”
League chairperson Adam Butcher also commented on the evolution of the league since its inception.
“To see the support we had, and to be able to put on a show and play on the full-sized oval is just great for the evolution of the women’s game in this area,” he said.
“We were only expecting maybe 300-400, so to double that and see so many families from each club all out supporting shows me that people care.”
