Bombers blitz rival Redlegs
2 min read

KAPUNDA destroyed Freeling by 48 goals in Barossa, Light & Gawler senior one netball on Saturday afternoon.

The Bombers started perfectly and burst out to a 10-goal lead at quarter-time.

The inexperienced Redlegs continued to suffer in the second term, and conceded a further 20 goals to trail by 24 at half-time.

Kapunda continued to pile on the misery, scoring a further 41 goals to 17 after the main break to secure its second victory of the season.

Senior player Penny Chappell was delighted with her side’s victory.

“It was a really good, consistent effort by our girls,” she said.

“We got 81 goals, and we were consistent across the four quarters.

“We were a little bit concerned with how things may have turned out given we had a bye, Easter and not a great deal of training.

“It was like starting the season all over again.”

Chappell said the consistency over four quarters was something her side focused on midweek.

“That was important to us, because in our first game we got off to a good start, but dropped away after half-time,” she said.

“Everyone played really well, it’s hard to pinpoint anyone in particular.

“Both goalies shot pretty evenly, they had a fair amount of chances.

“The defence got a lot of turnovers.”

Freeling will enjoy a bye this week, while the Bombers host South Gawler.

“It’ll be very tough against them, their side has changed a little bit, as has ours,” Chappell said.

“Hopefully it’s a good game.”

Elsewhere, South Gawler defeated fierce rival Gawler Central by 15 goals on Saturday.

The Lions and Tigers could barely be split in the first quarter, with the former leading by a goal at the first break.

Central then broke away in the second stanza to lead by two goals at half-time, but that’s where its highlights ended.

South scored 33 goals to 16 after half-time and stormed home.

Meanwhile, Nuriootpa took out a thriller over Angaston on Anzac Day.

The Tigers and Panthers were neck and neck for most of the day, before the Tigers edged ahead by one goal at the final whistle.

The result pushed Nuriootpa into the top four.

Finally, reigning premier Barossa District added insult to injury to Tanunda by destroying it by 64 goals.

The Bulldogs were terrifying in attack, and finished the game with 89 goals while restricting the Magpies to only 25.
