THE highly successful, Angaston-based thoroughbred business McEvoy Mitchell Racing celebrated its 10th anniversary at Murray Bridge on Saturday, July 4 with a hat-trick of wins.
The father-and-son training partnership of Tony and Calvin McEvoy landed Hypersonic, Winning Partner and Blow Torch to give themselves an anniversary present.
McEvoy Mitchell Racing began in 2010 and has blossomed into one of the country’s leading racing stables.
Its story began when David Hayes decided to relocate his Lindsay Park racing business to Euroa, in Victoria, and placed the Angaston-based property on the market.
Tony McEvoy had the option of moving to Euroa to continue his association with Lindsay Park, or staying in the Barossa Valley where his family had strong roots.
After a 33-year association with the Lindsay Park racing establishment of the family of Colin Hayes, Tony McEvoy joined up with businessman Wayne Mitchell, who was seeking to build his thoroughbred involvement.
Substantial improvements to the property have taken place over the decade to transform it into one of Australia’s premier horse training facilities, including stabling for 120 horses, grass and visco ride training tracks, horse pool, vet, farrier and more.
Of the more than 1000 winners, nine have been at the elite Group One level, firstly with Tony McEvoy as the trainer, and now in partnership with his son Calvin. There have also been 12 winners of Group Two races, 29 at Group Three level and 50 Listed race victories.
Trainer Tony McEvoy said he was delighted to celebrate the milestone with a trio of wins.
“The fourth of July, 10 years since we started our business with Wayne Mitchell, my business partner,” McEvoy said.
“We started with two horses and it has been a very interesting and very enjoyable 10 years… I’ve got really good people around me, and that’s the key.
“We’ve built a good team of horses and when The Brumby won recently at Murray Bridge, it was our 1000th winner… I’ve really enjoyed the 10 (years) and look forward to the next 10.”
Stake money won by horses trained by the McEvoy’s, headlined by champion mare Sunlight and the outstanding Hey Doc, currently sits at over $50 million.
